Why did you make me, God?
A desire to do God’s will is usually the main force motivating most, if not all, of us who join religious life. Certainly, that was the question that most haunted me; “Why did you make me, God?” I remember sitting in Church during my teenage years repeatedly asking God that question. The answer that inevitably came back was from my first grade catechism book: “God made me to know him, love him and serve him.” So then I would ask, “How do I serve you?” The answer, religious life, a thought that first popped into my head when I was in first grade, was not one I wanted to hear. But, peace would be denied me until I finally accepted that religious life was my calling. Forty years later I look back and know I have no regrets. On the contrary, my years in religious life have proven again and again the words of my first spiritual director; “You will never outdo God in generosity.”
